Every logo FOSC has used since 2017, in chronological order. One penguin, several haircuts.

  • The founding

    FOSC is born at Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena — and gets a face before the year is out: the badge master file is dated 29 November 2017. The rest of those months were spent stealing code.

  • Original FOSC badge: Tux inside a white roundel reading Free Open Source Club, with a transparent notch and white CLUB lettering

    The Tux badge

    The original badge: Tux sitting in a white roundel, “FREE OPEN SOURCE” arched on top and “CLUB” dropped into a notch cut out of the circle. The notch and lettering were transparent and white, so the logo only made sense on the dark background of the first fosc.space.

    Master file drawn in Illustrator on 29 November 2017 (says the XMP metadata). On the first-generation site from June 2018, the favicon set, and the poster of the 2019 soldering workshop.

  • Parody FOSC badge with the Horde crest reading Fucking Orks Stealers of Code

    The Orks schism

    Same roundel, hostile fork: Tux replaced by the Horde crest, and the arc re-reading the acronym as “FUCKING ORKS STEALERS OF CODE”. Its XMP descends from the very same Illustrator master as the real badge, so the parody was an inside job.

    Derived from the 2017 master file, modified 22 January 2019 according to its metadata.

  • FOSC badge with a solid black chevron and white CLUB lettering

    The inverted badge

    Same badge, fixed for everywhere else: the notch became a solid black chevron with “CLUB” reversed out in white. Shipped as Logo-invert.png with the second-generation site, it no longer cared what background you put it on, and it took over the favicon too.

    Second-generation site, archived 2020 through 2023. Printed on the back of the club hoodies at Fl0p 2022. Still the club’s crest today.

  • FOSC wordmark in angular white lettering on a black banner

    The FOSC wordmark

    The third-generation site added a typographic identity: the FOSC wordmark set in the angular Researcher typeface, the same lettering that scrambles at the top of the homepage. The Tux badge stayed on as the crest, the favicon and the footer seal.

  • The acronym wobbles

    For a few months the site quietly re-read FOSC as “Free Open Source Culture” — the space was gone, the culture wasn’t. The badge never noticed and kept saying CLUB, so the title eventually fell back in line.

Variants in the wild

GitLab avatar

A flat cut of the badge with “CLUB” set in plain black lettering and no chevron at all. It lives on as the avatar of the fosc-space group on GitLab.

The dark badge

The negative: dark disc, white “FREE OPEN SOURCE”, and a Tux who swapped his tuxedo for a white one. It survives as the avatar of the old webpage repository on GitLab.

Ad astra

The NASA meatball with FOSC across the disc — a club living at a .space domain was always going to try the suit on. Its file carries no dates, so when exactly it launched remains classified.
